From Overgrown Garden to Outdoor Oasis

Project Overview

The customer’s garden in Surrey had been neglected for years. Overgrown borders, tangled weeds and uneven ground meant the space was unusable, and it had become more of a worry than a pleasure. They had a vision of somewhere to relax and entertain, but they needed a team who could take it from wilderness to finished retreat.

Their brief: create a stylish, low-maintenance outdoor living space for all seasons.

Our Approach

1. Planning and design
We walked the garden with the customer to understand how they wanted to use the space. Together we agreed on the position of the decking, the gazebo and the flow between them, making the most of the light and the best views.

2. Clearing and preparation
The overgrown area was cleared completely, with brambles, roots and debris removed and taken away. We levelled and prepared the ground, laid a weed-control membrane and made sure drainage was right. Good preparation is what stops a deck sinking, warping or sprouting weeds later.

3. Building the decking
We built a strong timber frame on a solid base and fitted quality decking boards, evenly spaced and securely fixed. Treated timber and corrosion-resistant fixings were used so the deck would stand up to the British weather and look good for years.

4. Installing the gazebo
The gazebo was positioned on the new decking, anchored securely and finished to give a sheltered, inviting spot to sit out in whatever the weather. It also provides a natural focal point for the garden.

5. Finishing touches
We tidied the edges, treated and finished the timber where needed, and cleared the site completely, leaving the customer with a space that was ready to enjoy straight away.

The Result

What was once a forgotten, overgrown corner is now a beautiful garden oasis. The new decking gives a spacious, level area for dining and relaxing, and the gazebo creates a cosy retreat for summer evenings, family gatherings or a quiet morning coffee. Solidly built and thoughtfully finished, it’s designed to last and easy to maintain.

This tall, sculptural table lamp began life as a traditional hand brace, the cranked drill that carpenters turned by hand long before power tools existed. We’ve rescued it, restored its character and turned it into a lamp that’s as much a piece of art as a source of light. The distinctive S-shaped crank is the star of the show. Its worn metal, dark handle and chuck have all been kept in place, so the lamp carries the marks of every job it did in its working life. Each lamp is made from a different tool, so no two are ever quite the same. The Details Upcycled vintage brace drill: reclaimed and mounted upright as the lamp body, with the original crank, handle and chuck still on show Reclaimed timber base: a chunky, weathered oak-style base topped with a solid wooden block, giving stability and a rustic, handcrafted finish Braided fabric cable: a natural cream rope-style flex wrapped around the frame, adding to the vintage look Sage green drum shade: a soft, tapered shade that diffuses the light and complements the metal and timber Fully wired: supplied with a UK plug, [PAT tested / safety checked] Bulb: [bulb type and fitting, e.g. E27, included or not] Size: [height] x [base width]. Standing tall, it makes a real statement on a sideboard or console table. Perfect For Sideboards, console tables and shelving units Home offices and studies Workshops, garden rooms and man caves Pubs, cafés, bars and restaurants wanting industrial or vintage character A memorable gift for a woodworker, DIY enthusiast or tradesperson Why Upcycled? Every lamp saves a piece of tool history from landfill and gives it a second life. You get a genuinely unique light with a story behind it, and it will start a conversation whenever guests come round. Made by PAC Handyman Each lamp is handmade, so slight variations in the metal finish, wear marks and timber grain are part of its charm. We can also supply matching pieces from our other tool lamps, such as our hand drill and guitar lamps.

The customer’s front garden had become a chore. The lawn was patchy, weeds kept returning through the borders and the whole space looked tired from the street. They were spending more time maintaining it than enjoying it, and they wanted a fresh, welcoming first impression for their home.
